Day 71-72: Riding the Waves on the Bike, and a Shrimp Burger

Port Townsend to Coupeville (by ferry) to Anacortes

42.36 Miles | 1:38 Riding Time | 0:35 Sailing Time

It’s Thursday and Friday, June 20 - 21, 2024, and it’s Day 71 - 72 of my cross country motorcycle trip.

The day started off in Port Townsend. I had reservations for the 12:30 PM ferry to Coupeville, so I had the morning to spend in town. Breakfast at the Lighthouse Cafe, was really good. I had a baguette with egg, prosciutto, cheese and arugula—tasty!

After that, I walked over to Mara’s Gallery to take a look at a painting I saw in the window last night. It was a dog with one floppy ear, like Finely has. After a brief text with Donette, the new pup is on it’s way to our apartment—to be named…suggestions welcome.

Getting back to my bike…I was chatting with a Harley-Davidson rider that had parked a few spots down the block, when the woman who runs the pizza shop across the street came out and told me that she saw someone hit my bike with their car. The person who parked behind me had apparently hit my bike and rocked it off it’s kickstand, but stopped quickly enough and backed up that it didn’t knock my bike over. After looking carefully, I saw that there was no damage to the bike other than a tiny scratch on the metal guards I installed. I bought a black Sharpie and filled in the scratch—good as new. Whew!!

The ferry to Coupeville was fun. It was the first time I had taken a ferry with my motorcycle. The trip was only about 35 minutes, but it saved about 2 hours over going by land. It was also nice that motorcycles boarded first, and got off the boat first as well.

At the recommendation of a guy I met at my hotel in Nashville, I stopped at the Shrimp Shack, and had a shrimp burger, which was surprisingly good. Made it to my hotel in Anacortes, and had dinner at Tin House Thai food and got some ice cream at the Fidalgo Drive Inn.

I was waiting for a package that Donette had sent me, so I spent the next day wandering around Anacortes. I walked a few miles, checked out downtown. Had lunch at Adrift and restocked some supplies. Dinner at the Brown Lantern was good. I had the CBGB—boneless, skinless chicken breast charbroiled and topped with fresh basil, tomato, bacon, and melted gorgonzola cheese. Served on a ciabatta roll with our roasted red pepper mayo.

Walking about 1.5 miles back to my hotel, and felt like it was a net-zero calorie day.
