Day 51: Riding to the Redwoods

Fort Bragg, CA through Eureka, Redwoods National Park to Klamath, CA

200.04 Miles | 4:08 Riding Time

It’s Friday, May 31, 2024, and it’s Day 50 of my cross country motorcycle trip.

Today started out with a little bit of a leak on the ground under Scott’s car. It didn’t look or seem like oil. It was a little bit of engine coolant. We went over to the auto parts store and picked up some coolant in case it got worse, and we went to Starbucks for some breakfast.

Well, when we finished there, it had gotten worse. He was leaving a line of coolant in the parking lot. He got on the phone to see if there was any place nearby that might be able to check it out, but no luck. Went across to the supermarket parking lot, jacked up the car, took the tire off to get access and see if we could see something obvious, like a loose hose or hose clamp. Again, no luck. So, at around noon, we said our goodbyes. Scott headed back home, and stopped every thirty minutes or so to check the level and top it off. He made it safely home.

I headed north on RT 1 for 200 miles to (a little past) the Redwoods National Park. Why start off with picture of a Sprinter van? Well these folks and I played tag for about the next 3.5 hours.

Today’s ride included a stretch that was inland from the coast a little—north of Mendocino. It was a pretty and twisty section that went downhill and met up with RT 101, which was my road for the rest of the day. The further north I went, the more often I would see redwoods interspersed with the other trees. And, the more often I would see other motorcycles.

I made it to the visitors center at the Redwoods National Park at 5:16 PM. Unfortunately, they closed at 5:00 PM, so I took a quick break and headed on to my hotel. I’ll come back in the morning and get my park passport stamp and ride through the scenic road. For now, I’ll stick to the “main” road.
