Day 24: Pueblo, CO to Manitou Springs, CO

61.74 Miles | 1:52 Riding Time

Today is Saturday, May 4, 2024, and it’s Day 24 of my cross country motorcycle trip.

It started off cold and cloudy for today’s very short ride. I needed to stop in Colorado Springs to get new tires for the bike. When I stopped for my scheduled service last week in Kansas City, they told me there was a few additional things they didn’t have the time to do while I was there:

  1. A software update that was free, but would take hours to download

  2. My tires would need to be replaced soon (the stock tires last between 4k and 6k miles. I have about 6.8k on the bike already.

  3. They think there is some oil “seeping” from the water pump, but they can’t find the source. So, they cleaned it and told me to keep an eye on it for a few hundred miles to see if it’s actually oil, or just road grime.

I thought it best to replace the tires before I did some serious mountain riding in Colorado, and made an appointment at Colorado Springs Powersports. Randy was really nice and helpful. They got the software updated, fitted me with some new Michelin Moto Road 6 tires, and checked to try to find the oil leak. Well, they couldn’t find anything, and they think it was just road grime. So…just keep an eye on it. OK.

After that, I went over to the Garden to the Gods, which is a 1,341 acre public park with amazing rock formations. I had been there once before, in 1983 on a Boy Scout trip. We went there, and then up the Cog Railway to the top of Pikes Peak.

Tomorrow, I’m going up on the Cog Railway again, too.
