Day 2: Hagerstown, MD to Greenville, SC

508.3 Miles |

8:22 Riding Time

It was a loooooong day! Started off raining, with another day of highway riding. Fortunately, it cleared up pretty quickly, and there wasn’t a ton of traffic on a Friday morning.

I had plans to meet a friend I hadn’t seen in 35 years for coffee in Roanoke, VA. The ride to Roanoke was about 3.5 hours. I met Lisa at Sweet Donkey Coffee House. It was great to catch up, and hear about life in Roanoke and how great her kids are doing (she’s really proud of you, kiddos).

Back on the road, I finally got off of US-81, and on to US-77 to Charlotte, NC. There is a huge downhill stretch of US-77 near the VA/NC border called Fancy Gap that offers beautiful views of both states.

It’s hard to tell how steep the road is from the photos, but the fact that there are runaway truck ramps ought to give you a good idea.

Other than the traffic getting from US-77 to US-85 that I was warned about, the ride down to Greenville was pretty uneventful. I was glad to get to my hotel, have some dinner and a drink, and get to bed. Tomorrow starts my two-day class at the US Rider Academy at the BMW Performance center…I’m excited.
